At 140 PM AST, Doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms, capable of producing winds to around 30 knots and frequent lightning. These thunderstorms were located across the Atlantic coastal and offshore waters, and the eastern waters of Puerto Rico and the northern U.S. Virgin Islands. Additional thunderstorms are expected to develop over the western waters of Puerto Rico.

Instructions:

Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes.

  • Special Marine Warning for, Atlantic Waters of Puerto Rico AND USVI from 10 NM to 19.5N, Coastal Waters OF Northwestern Puerto Rico out 10 NM, Coastal Waters of Northern Puerto Rico out 10 NM, Mona Passage Southward to 17N,

  • Until 600 PM AST.

  • At 358 PM AST, cluster of thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts were located over the Mona Passage, Atlantic Offshore Waters and the coastal waters of western and northern Puerto Rico, moving northwest at 30 knots.

HAZARD,Waterspouts and wind gusts 34 knots or greater.

IMPACT,Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.

Move to safe harbor until hazardous weather passes. Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects.
