Local reports and river gage data indicate a glacier dammed lake release on the Kennicott River near McCarthy. Water levels on the Kennicott are currently rising and will continue to rise over the next 24-48 hours, cresting at or prior to Monday evening.

At this time, the river is expected to crest below minor flood stage. Widespread flooding is not anticipated, although the following hazards will be present:

-Significant water level rises (feet/day) -Bank erosion: Fast moving water may undercut riverbanks -Debris: Increased flow can carry large debris, including trees and wood

Recreationalists, hikers and packrafters in the McCarthy area and along the Kennicott River should exercise extreme caution. Avoid parking vehicles and camping near the immediate riverbanks. Do not attempt to cross fast flowing water.
