As Invest 95W continues to organize, a WWB (westerly wind burst) that we've been monitoring along the equator for the last 24 hours is getting pulled northeastward, as it attempts to wrap into the developing surface circulation of Invest 95W. This developing surface circulation is estimated to be near 6.3N 165.2E, or nearly half way between Kosrae and Ailinglaplap in the RMI. Along the circulation's southern and southeastern flanks is a large area of sustained winds of 20-30 knots (23-35 mph). Additionally, areas of intense shower and thunderstorm development near the center could bring wind gusts to 35 knots (40 mph). This, in addition to locally heavy rainfall, will likely lead to significant coastal erosion and significant inundation along southern and western shores of islands and atolls across the southern RMI, including Majuro. Also, if these winds do indeed wrap around the circulation, Kosrae may see northerly to northeasterly swells increase somewhat rapidly. Residents are urged to begin preparations now, especially in the RMI and Majuro. The June 29th Full Moon cycle will also contribute to higher high tides and lower low tides, that could exacerbate any coastal inundation. EVENT: Unusually strong and persistent sustained winds of 20-30 knots (23-35 mph), with gusts to 35 knots (40 mph) possible. TIMING: Onset will occur within the next 3-9 hours, and persist through Monday, possibly longer. IMPACTS: Significant coastal erosion and significant inundation possible.
-
WHAT: West winds 15 to 20 knots with frequent gusts to 30 knots and occasional gusts to 35 knots expected.
-
WHERE: Majuro Coastal Waters.
-
WHEN: Until 3 AM ChST Tuesday.
-
IMPACTS: Conditions will be hazardous to small craft.
-
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: A westerly wind burst wrapping into Invest Area 95W could bring unusual complications because the wind direction is so far out of the ordinary. Also, gale force gusts could be particularly hard on vessels of less substantial construction.
