The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a

  • Flash Flood Warning for, Jackson County in southern Illinois,

  • Until 615 AM CDT Friday.

  • At 1209 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

IMPACT,Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

  • Some locations that will experience flash flooding include, Carbondale, Murphysboro, De Soto, Elkville, Ava, Grand Tower, Cedar Lake Area, Makanda, Dowell, Campbell Hill, Vergennes and Gorham.

Instructions:

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

  • WHEN: Through late Saturday night.

  • IMPACTS: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    • Repeat rounds of thunderstorms over the next several days will increase the threat for flooding. While 1 to 2 inches is forecast on average, the flooding threat is more from any storms that might sit or repeat over the same areas,where 2 to 3 times that average amount may be enhanced locally, leading to flood issues.
