A flood alert has been issued. Groundwater is high, within 2m of the surface at the East Dean borehole, but slowly falling a few centimetres each day. Minor groundwater flood impacts are expected to continue, affecting the ability of the sewage network to operate in East Dean, Charlton, Singleton and West Dean. Water will affect some basements. On Monday 13/05/2024 a band of rain is expected to arrive from the south west, which will continue into Tuesday morning. Between 10 and 30mm of rain could be possible. Groundwater could rise a centimetre or two on Monday, but should then fall again by Wednesday. Isolated showers are forecast Thursday and Friday 17/05/2024, possibly continuing through next week. Despite the rain and showers, the overall trend is that groundwater is expected to continue to fall. Although not fast. Minor flood impacts affecting the sewage network could continue through to June. If you have pumps to help reduce groundwater levels in your property, ensure they are operational. - In rural locations, farmers should consider moving livestock and equipment away from areas likely to flood.
- Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water - 30 cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet.
- Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it.
