World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

A Call to Action for Sustainable Land Management and Climate Resilience

Last Monday, June 17, marked the annual World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought – a United Nations event aimed at raising awareness about the critical issues of land degradation and water scarcity.

Desertification and drought affect more than 100 countries and over 1 billion people worldwide. The consequences are far-reaching and have direct impacts on food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity.

As climate change continues to intensify, the need for sustainable land management practices has never been more urgent. Weather hazards, such as increased frequency of extreme temperatures, storms, heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding events, will occur more often in the future, increasing the risk of economic damage, physical stress, and threat to the survival of the entire ecosystems.

Which is where meteoblue comes in.

To avoid the risk of financial damage (as well as to meet the EU's 2023 obligations for sustainable business activities if residing in Europe), organisations are obliged to consider the impact of climate change both in their strategic plans and in their day-to-day operations.

meteoblue is one of the first companies to offer location-specific climate risk assessment reports evaluating the potential risk in the future.

Our climate services include Climate Analysis, Climate Data & Visuals, and Climate Risk Assessment for any location on the planet, using historical data and future emissions scenarios to predict future climate and understand the challenges of climate change.

As a tool for climate prediction and risk assessment data, our climate+ product is the perfect solution to fulfil the requirements for EU taxonomy, and other regulatory frameworks for climate risk assessments.

In ongoing efforts in this area, meteoblue is committed to reinvesting 5% of climate+ revenues into climate change mitigation projects.

Individuals can play a crucial role too by adopting simple sustainable pratices in their daily lives, such as:

  • Supporting sustainable agriculture
  • Reducing water consumption
  • Reducing waste by recycling materials and reusing items
  • Advocating for policies that protect land resources

By embracing sustainable practices today, we can pave the way for a greener and more resilient tomorrow. World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to safeguard the environment and ensure that future generations inherit a planet capable of sustaining life and prosperity.
