Cyclone in New Zealand

A state of emergency was declared in New Zealand today. Cyclone Gabrielle is currently raging over New Zealand.

Our weather warnings map shows the cyclone with severe wind gusts. These maps summarise all weather warnings issued by the national weather services in a simple overview.

Due to the high sea surface temperature and the low vertical wind shear, Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle developed from a tropical low in the northeastern Coral Sea near the Solomon Islands. On its way past Australia into the South Pacific, Cyclone Gabrielle reached intensity levels up to category 3 (Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale with 5 categories). On 12 February, Cyclone Gabriel hit the North Island of New Zealand, where it caused gale-force winds and flooding.

The cyclone is visible on our wind animation map. The strong wind gusts around New Zealand and their intensities are also shown in our wind map.

Cyclone Gabrielle is east of East Cape and moving southeast away from New Zealand. However, heavy rain is expected to continue until Thursday, and coastal flooding still affects the exposed coasts of the North Island.
