An active front is lying over Bay of Plenty and moving slowly eastwards. For Bay of Plenty east of about Te Puke, Waikato southeast of about Tokoroa, the Taupo area from the township northwards, and Tairawhiti/Gisborne about and north of Te Puia Springs there is a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS with localised downpours of 30 to 40 mm/h. The risk should ease from the west during the morning. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
