Helaas zijn lage bewolking en mist moeilijk te onderscheiden van de temperatuur van het aardoppervlak en kunnen zij ’s nachts vrijwel onzichtbaar zijn. Meteosat-satellietbeelden voor Europa worden in realtime elke 5 minuten bijgewerkt. GOES-16/GOES-17 (Noord- en Zuid-Amerika) en Himawari (Azië) worden elke 10 minuten bijgewerkt.
Neerslag wordt geschat met radar en satellieten. Neerslagschattingen van satellieten zijn ’s nachts minder nauwkeurig dan overdag.
