Innovation & Event Review 2024

Moving into 2025, it is a good time to reflect on our key innovations and major events of 2024. This also provides our users with an opportunity to catch up on the more recently introduced functions and offers from meteoblue.

Favourite Locations app feature & 1,800 new stations in France

Our first launch of 2024 was a major Android app upgrade, adding the Favourite Locations. With this new function, you can save your preferred locations or coordinates and access them more quickly and conveniently. You can also swipe left to rename them, which allows you to personalise and organise your locations with ease.
In our ongoing commitment to offer the best-in-class weather forecast, we continually expand our data sources, adding more live weather station data to our system. A major step in this direction was the addition of more than 1'800 weather stations across France, for a nationwide improvement of forecast accuracy, for model training, and for precipitation nowcasting. Consecutive additions for other countries took place throughout the year.

Upgraded meteoblue Learning MultiModel & WRFAMS for South America

We enhanced the meteoblue Learning MultiModel (mLM), improving the forecast accuracy for temperature, wind speed, and dew point.
Furthermore, the forecast processing chain for South America and surrounding areas was enriched with the WRFAMS weather model. It boasts 7km spatial resolution and a 180-hour forecast range. This addition significantly improves local forecasts of numerous weather variables, including temperature, windspeed, and precipitation.

Meteogram Air enhancements & new Wind Compass

Meteogram Air, our very first meteogram (launched as early as 2004), underwent a major design upgrade. It now includes improved colour-coding for better readability, additional air stability indices and specialised data for aviators, paragliders and meteorologists. These changes increase its value for professionals in these fields.

Another distinctive feature we introduced was the new Wind Compass, integrated as a part of the wind animation. It displays wind speed distribution using input from multiple weather models, which provides our users with a clearer understanding of the reliability of wind forecasts for a specific location. You can enable the Wind Compass by simply left-clicking on the wind animation map.

Refined Meteogram MultiModel for clearer forecast visualisation

In April 2024, we enhanced our pioneering Meteogram MultiModel with thinner lines for clearer model distinction, smaller weather icons for better readability, and a precipitation chart showing "model agreement" with various visualisation options.

Global MFWAM wave data & outdoor adventures

In May 2024, we added the MFWAM ocean model to our maps, as well as to our API portfolio. It offers global wave data with 8 km resolution - the finest of its kind. Covering a 10-day forecast range, the model calculates various wave types, and can be selected in the bottom right corner of the Weather Maps interface.

Later on that month, the meteoblue team met for an outdoor team event in the countryside near Basel. Facing mixed weather, we used our precipitation radar to identify the rain pauses for activities that included a high ropes course, a set of "farmer's challenges", as well as downhill race on scooters, which made this a very eventful and memorable day.

Acquisition by Windy.com & the launch of Urban Wind Map

In June, Windyty, S.E., the operator of Windy.com, acquired a controlling interest in meteoblue, uniting two of the most innovative companies in the weather forecasting industry.
This merger is bound to leverage the strengths, expertise and resources of both companies, further revolutionising both the visualisation and the quality of the weather data we provide.
In line with this aim, we launched our next City Climate model upgrade: the unique 2x2-metre live Urban Wind Map for Zurich, which shows unmatched details in hourly steps for 3 days ahead, and helps us transform the understanding of urban wind patterns.

MultiModel relative humidity upgrade & Creative Camp with Windy

Yet another MultiModel upgrade went live, this time adding a chart with relative humidity and individual colour-coding for each weather model. This enables our users to compare model forecasts across different locations and select models directly on our website.
In July, we organised a three-day Creative Camp that combined retreat, nature, creativity, adventure and celebration. To strengthen our collaboration, our new colleagues from Windy joined in, too. We are very thankful that they were willing to come along, undertaking a 10-hour journey on a bus with no AC just to be with us!

Urban Heat Maps for over 80 cities & high-resolution ocean models

Our trail-blazing Urban Heat Maps became available as a widget for more than 80 cities worldwide, allowing for straightforward implementation of this dynamic element into websites, applications or systems – and available on our website free of charge.
Furthermore, we integrated two high-resolution ocean models into our Weather Maps, providing enhanced wave information. You can now explore the differences between wave types and their impact on surfing or sailing, by using the model selection tool in the bottom right corner of our Weather Maps.

ECMWF HRES model integration, upgrades of aviation features & EMS

In September, we integrated the ECMWF HRES model into our mLM, MultiModel and Weather Maps.
meteoblue also participated in the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Annual Conference, with 3 scientific papers and 1 poster. They covered urban heat modelling, climate change and land use in 2100, and showed the applications of prediction models for future projections and decision support.
An upgrade of our aviation-oriented features included the Meteogram Thermal Forecast, newly with point-specific forecast data from our mLM. On top of that, the redesigned Stueve and Sounding diagrams, now with the option to generate them with data from at least 5 weather models for any location on Earth, further enhanced our point+ subscription.

MetTech Expo, Extreme Weather Congress & meteoblue Day

In Autumn, meteoblue had a strong presence at the Meteorological Technology World Expo in Vienna, showcasing top-tier precision weather services. Our booth attracted several hundred visitors, providing them with detailed information, insights into our weather solutions, as well as with traditional Swiss Läckerli - and of course with our legendary t-shirts.
At the Extreme Weather Congress, a key event bringing together more than 700 specialists focusing on climate change, sustainability, and disaster risk mitigation for urban planning, meteoblue delivered two well-attended presentations and conducted a City Climate workshop.
Finally, we held our annual meteoblue day in Basel, deepening our connection to our hometown.

Forecast enhancements with WRF-5, MENA Climate Proof Forum & Smart City Expo

We showcased our unique Urban Heat Maps and Urban Wind Maps at the MENA Climate Proof Forum in Dubai, and also at the world’s largest urban innovation event in Barcelona, the Smart City Expo World Congress. At our booth, we engaged with potential and existing clients to discuss how meteoblue services can address their challenges in planning and implementing climate change adaptation measures in their cities.

We further enhanced our weather model portfolio by adding the WRF-5 model, run by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). This model covers Southeast Europe with a 5 km resolution and provides an 84-hour forecast. You can visualise the data for more than 20 weather variables on the Weather Maps by selecting the model in the bottom right corner.

Celebrating the end of 2024: A festive evening at meteoblue

Last but not least, we were happy to celebrate the final days of the year 2024 together. It was a festive evening filled with excitement and unforgettable moments, as well as reflection of the past and future of meteoblue.

We sincerely thank our users and customers for their trust and support throughout 2024. As we step into 2025, we are excited to bring new ideas and innovations to further enhance your weather and climate experience.
