Imaginea satelitară în timp real combină lumina vizibilă în timpul zilei cu radiația infraroșie pe timp de noapte. Noaptea, imaginea nu este întunecată deoarece radiația infraroșie poate detecta diferențele de temperatură. Din păcate, norii joși și ceața sunt dificil de deosebit de temperaturile solului și, prin urmare, pot fi aproape invizibili pe timp de noapte. Imaginile satelitare Meteosat pentru Europa sunt actualizate în timp real la fiecare 5 minute. Imaginile GOES-16/GOES-17 (America de Nord și de Sud) și Himawari (Asia) se actualizează la fiecare 10 minute.
Precipitațiile sunt estimate pe baza radarului și a sateliților. Estimările de precipitații provenite de la sateliți sunt mai puțin precise noaptea decât în timpul zilei.
