La imagen de satélite en tiempo real se aprovecha de la combinación de bandas de la luz visible y de la luz infrarroja. Cómo se pueden detectar cambios de temperaturas a través de la banda infrarrojo, la imagen no aparece oscura de noche. No obstante, la niebla y las nubes bajas son apenas visibles en las imágenes de infrarrojo ya que las diferencias de temperaturas entre el suelo y la niebla son muy pequeñas, por eso, son casi invisibles durante la noche. Las imágenes de satélite del Meteosat (Europa) son actualizados en tiempo real cada 5 minutos. Las imágenes del GOES-16/GOES-17 (América del Norte y América del Sur) y Himawari (Asia) son actualizadas cada 10 minutos.
La precipitación se estima a partir del radar y de los satélites. Las estimaciones de la precipitación desde los satélites son menos precisas durante la noche que durante el día.
